Chemical properties: Colourless flowable liquid. It smells terribly bad. Pure product decomposes slowly in air, and its aqueous solution oxidizes into disulfide in air. The chemical properties of mercaptan and alcohols are both due to the presence of hydrothiol and hydroxyl groups. It can act as additive for certain types of unsaturated compounds and is easy to decompose in alkaline and hydrochloric acid. It can be mixed with water, ethanol, ether and benzene arbitrarily.

Purpose: To study the use of proteins as nitrogen-free thiohydrogen reagents. A reductant for fluorescence reaction of phthalic aldehyde and amino acid in alkaline medium. It can prevent the oxidation of some compounds such as tetrahydrofolic acid. Solvent. Dye intermediate. Flotation agent. Pesticides. Plasticizer.
